Schlemmer began several years ago when he started building a workshop behind his house which sits adjacent to the JR Watson school grounds. Mr. Schlemmer realized this would be a great learning opportunity for our students, who drive by the shop everyday on the bus. Students got to help stain wood, put stone on the walls, and see the many stages of a building project. This partnership has grown from there. He plans lessons using math and science standards and gives kids hands on opportunities to see how science and math apply to the real world. This year kindergartners have had the opportunity to learn about recycling, reusing and re-purposing by seeing real world examples of re-purposed items in his workshop. They have also learned about the life of a tree and how the strength of the wood doesn't always depend on the tree, but the way it is cut. Mr. Schlemmer has a heart for children and an amazing way of looking at the world. He is not only a fabulous teacher, but a great role model for the students. During the winter months he visits the children in their classrooms to share pictures and stories from trips around the world, as well as many other lessons. When the weather warms up again, they will return to the shop to see what other incredible things he has been working on.
